Hi all, I've just registered on this site.
I've a quick question for you...
I produce hardcore using reason 2.5, and have started to attempt to use accapellas. All the acapellas i have are usually at a bpm level of around 138, and i produce all my hardcore at 170-175. When i get the acapella up to the right bpm and it flows nicely with the beat, the singing sounds chipmunky. I was just wondering wether there is a way to change the acapellas tempo but keep the same pitch as it was originally if ya get me.
Any replies will be most appreciated as its starting to do my head in!

Time stretching! It changes the tempo, but keeps the same key.
You can't do it in Reason though I don't think. I do all mine in Soundforge - does anybody know if theres any freeware/shareware timestretchers around?

Ah right. well i've got cool edit pro which has time stretching. The only thing i've found is that it doesnt measure it in BPM so i wont know wether the tempo is right or not. Any other suggestions?

There is nothing that I know of that will measure the bpm of an acapella.
You need to figure it out yourself.

I recommend Steinberg Wavelab 5. I work whit Wavelab since 4 years and im guiet happy whit it. Some nice effects in it like Timestrecht which allows you to set up basic temp and the temp you wish to have it after whitout loosing the pitch and the quality is nearly the same. It has Vst support aswell and tons of other abilitys. One of the best Sample software in my opinnion and very simple to use.
Cheers

ask and you shall recieve!
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - it's a free program that will let you change tempo of wav files... works great with acapellas

For time streching I find it best to use Sony Acid Pro and it displays the bpm also :)

Its not always right, and acapellas are very hard to automatically detect the tempo of.
You need to calculate it manually, and you need a good grasp of musical structure. Look for beats within the pella. Often the first beat of a bar is emphasised more by the singer, which is a good idea. You can then do the whole 1-2-3-4 counting thing to check it out.
Select over what you believe to be a suitable musical interlude within soundforge, or audacity or whatever you use. Count how many beats. Check what time you have selected and divide the number of beats by the time in seconds and then divide once more by 60. This will give you an approximate tempo. Use this as a guide for your time stretching.
When using the pella within your mix, make sure it sits nicely as one long file. If not then adjust the tempo once more until a better fit is achieved. Then cut the pella up into smaller, more manageable chunks. You have more control over how well it fits as you can position the start bang on the beat then

try making a beat with 16 or 32 beats or something.
then put in the acapella without changing the pitch, then experiment with the bpm.
if it sounds right, it probably is. then put it in CEP and change accordingly.
note, it is vital that the acapella doesn't align with the song, so you can find the bpm.

Convert to wav and stick it into a sampler of course!
Or, cut it up in recycle and stick in dr-rex/or a sampler.
