Just after a lil different ideas and tips regarding mixing down.

im working on this track and the levels are fine all the way up until the breakdown finishes and the mainbreak(chorus bit) kicks off.

The bit where the mainbreak kicks off sounds fine and ballanced, only thing is the volume of it is a touch too high.

Im not sure if I should automate the overall volume of the track down for that section, or should I take the volume of the synths down. Only thing is if i take the synths or any other element down, it wont sound ballanced the way i want it.

I definitely wouldn't automate the main volume in that fashion. I get the impression you should be mixing your breakdown up, instead of everything else down... but it's hard to advise on the information given. Is there any way you could get clips up to show us what you mean?

yeah i mix my breakdown up and add sounds and build it to a climax.
but when the main break comes in with all the sounds from the breakdown and the beats, it sounds just a touch too loud and powerful.

what i did was automate the gain on a compressor.
i reduced it from 0db to -1.6 just for the bit of the main break which seemed to work fine.

the track i did this on

see if i did something like this, would that really give the mastering engineer a hard time?

cheers for the help Owen
the breakbeat in the track is from your Bonus Sample CD

Sorry - triple busy at the moment. I know this thread's here, but I'll return to it in a few days so I can (hopefully) contribute something worthwhile! :)

While I havent heard the track (I dont want to sign up to crappyplanet) I can say that automating the volume isnt a very good idea because it has the potential to cause problems.

What if it sounds fine to you, but the mastering engineer thinks its too much?

I suggest keeping the volume of the breakdown lower, the mastering engineer can bring it up with compression (after all, thats what they do).

I find it better that the climax hits harder and louder than the breakdown it just came from. It makes it seem more powerful. If you have a really loud breakdown, it wont have the same energy.

Thats what I've found anyway.

Two things -

1. I'd go with what rygOr said.

2. What a Tune!

Production is tight but the main lead could be fatter.Sound like your just using VanGuard on the main lead on the first breakdown.Try layering it a bit more to fatten it up a bit.

Nice tune though;)

Pish posh!

Its complicated and wires go everywhere! And if you plug things in the wrong places you can get awful feedback!
