set it to loop for 8 bars
should look like this
|1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...|
the | is your loop marker
hold ctrl and click the begining of bar 1 to set the left loop
hold alt and click the begining of bar 9 to set the right loop
from there add a kick drum on each beat so it will kinda look like this
1kick kick kick 2 kick kick kick...
that will loop over and over just make sure you have your player set to loop (its by the play button, it looks like an arrow that makes an oval and will be blue when active)
from there just load up your vst and start making patterns to see what you can come up with. get use to how certain sounds look when they are mapped out to midi.
should keep you busy for a bit just figuring out all the different feels you can get just by adding or subtracting notes.

Producing takes a lot of time and effort, what I would do in your shoes is grab some midi files from http://midi.johnsteenbergen.com/archive.php. Have a look at how they structure the chords & how easy it is to abuse a 8bar loop turning it into a 16+ bars of pure evil hardcore mayhem. As for loops & samples try hardcoreproducer.com (sorry for the spam) but there are loads of free samples there. Keep at it, things wont happen over night. Also what vsts & hardware you got?

im not to experienced with it mainly just mess around a bit with it
but id get a good bunch of vst's
http://www.refx.net/downloads.htm some good demos on there i suggest vanguard and i use a recorder device http://www.audio-recorders.net/ to sample the sounds i come up with into mp3s then just import them to cubase its probably the complete wrong way to go about it but its still gets the job done i also use bome's keyboard hope it helps

cubase comes with some vsts, but you're going to want more. google some up for more synths, samplers, and effects. also, dorumalia has some ok free samples you can check out. as far as writing actual music, go buy a book on music theory and listen to a bunch of tracks, pick out the elements going on and try to mimic it.

I agree with milo, you gotta learn some music theory. It no good knowing how to use cubase if you can't write a melody.

You shouldn't import an mp3 and work with that in cubase. First of all, the quality that an mp3 provides you with is OK, but not very good. If you export your song and compress it to another mp3, you will hear that the quality is alot worse than if you had used .wav instead. And as if that weren't enough, mp3 has offset problems, so if you play a properly sampled kick together with an offset mp3-kick you'll notice that the mp3-kick has a slight delay. Also, you shouldn't use an mp3 as the source and convert from .mp3 to .wav to work with a sample in cubase, but you should rather use .wav as the source. That way, no quality loss. GL

Rooney, are you trying to make that 8 bar loop go on for longer across the sequencer, if so just select it and press Ctrl+D. That works just like copy and past, but places it straight after the other parts end.
And just to point out, You can not work with mp3's in cubase, when you import an mp3 cubase will decode it and place the wav in the project folder, and work from that wav file.
