Yamaha created it as one of the default patches for their DX7 keyboard, which was a huge success!

could it just have been a triangle osc on its own and pretty low pitched??
I did some research last night...
The original donk came off a Yamaha DX7 (the most popular FM synthesizer ever!). It's one of the original patches, "Xylophone", I believe. I got hold of the original DX7 soundbank and went through every patch, and "Xylophone" near the end was the only one that sounded like it could have been used as a donk without loads of processing. I did have to compress it and boost the bass a little to get it to sound useable, but even then it sounded a bit thin. It sounded like an oldskool donk (if there is such a thing), rather than a more typical modern donk you might find in a Scouse House tune. I think if you sampled it and played around with it, you could get some mad sounds, but I'm going to experiment with recreating the donk on my Virus to see if I can get a more modern sound.
Wish me luck! :)
Any results you get on the virus post them mate (mid file) .. i have a virus :)

I done it! Woo....
I won't post up the MIDI, but I can give you an idea of how to program it on the Virus... (and I'll post up an mp3 so you can hear how it should sound).
You need OSC 1: set to sine
OSC 2: set to sine / sync OFF / FM amount 124 (no more, no less)
OSC 3: not used
Oscillator mix should be allllllll the way over to OSC 2 only.
Filter 1: Set to maximum cut off / maximum envelope amount / no resonance
Filter 2: Set to minimum cut off / maximum envelope amount / no resonance
You want the filter envelope shape to kinda "donk" down... so put the decay to about 30-40, and the sustain to 0.
That'll get you the basic sound, but you definitely need to compress it (as with the FM7 sound), and EQ or layering is appropriate if you want to use it as a bass sound rather than just a stab.
I added a touch of noise, a touch of sub OSC, a touch of ring modulation, then I stuck the output through the sample rate reducer to make it sound a little more lo-fi (which kinda phattens it, in this case).
My next step would be to mess around with the filter settings etc, but that should be a good enough starting point for you!

I've just posted a detailed walk-through... I'd be doing you an even bigger favour by not supplying the patch!

as far as a know the klubbheads were the 1st people to use the donk bassline, then djs like boozywoozy and other hollandhouse producers started using it... then typical liverpudlian comes along, nicks it and calls it scouse!!
av got a record, klubbheads - bamboo sessions vol1, says "WE INVENTED THE BAMBOO BASS" along the bottom.

I don't know how long scouse has been about myself but wasn't this type of bass rinsed in hard house years ago?

I'm not sure, but I don't particularly like V-Station. Sorry!
