i've realised my mixdowns on reason really lack the pro quality sound of professionally mastered tracks, but after hearing some of the unmastered versions of tracks mastered by ruffage i realised my tracks where actually great the only reason they weren't up to standard was because of the lack of mastering effects. For a long time i have been trying to produce master quality tracks in reason 2.5 alone, but i've realised this isn't possible.
anyone got any tips advice on mixing down in reason?

Nah, I've been getting ruffage to master my tracks and he recommends againt it.
Best thing to do is make sure is eq'd and lightly compressed to avoid giant spikes.
Its good to mixdown at various volumes to make sure that things are supposed to sound right.
The M-class is good, but doesnt compare to a mastering engineer.

i've been doing mixdowns on a pair of yamaha msp5's for the past few months, and i agree good monitors are essential when mixing down. Anyway i'm sending ruffage a trance track of mine to master, which will really be my first properly finished tune. Rygor if you pm me your msn address i will send you the track when its done :-)

when you say eq'd and llightly compressed. do you mean apply eq and compression to the overall mix? I thought thats what the mastering engineer does. I removed the overall compression and eq from my track, but theres still eq and compression on certain mixer channels. e.g on the kick and hook

yep, having good monitors definitely works best, because for pre-mastering, nothing is better than the best sound you can hear, and your ears.
over the years ive gotten much better at trying to make my mixdowns better. i was once told, "hey i like your track, but the mixdown is absolutely! terrible!" why? i asked, and he replied, "it sounds like you have some really crappy speakers..." and then i realized what he meant.
i went from crappy speakers to somewhat better speakers. and i always listen to my tracks on a cd on different systems to kind of get a basic surmise of what i like and dont like with how i eq'd and mastered my track. i used to use my dj headphones before they died too. if you cant afford really good monitors, just save up for a really really good pair of studio headphones, its better than $20 speakers from a computer store. even more expensive "home sound systems" arent best, because the systems have different frequency reproduction, like having an off eq, because theyre meant for movies and ect. at a rock concert, the channels will be very differently EQ'd than settings at a club venue. its kinda like that. studio monitor speakers will have better sound that is more close to what you would hear in a club system.
like my speakers are really bassy, and the mid and high freqs arent as crisp n clear, so it askews how i eq my tracks.
doing it purely in reason is a bit hard if ya have the older versions, as others said.
i usually use Sound forge afterwards, or sometimes apply some eqing and or compression in acid pro 4 with the effects it comes with(because it is rarely i do everything in reason. i usually have samples to put in after my reason production, whether its wav snippits or other loops i made say, outta fruity loops).
im a really complicated producer, haha. i kinda just bounce around everywhere XD

can you recommend any makes at decent prices? i'll be away from home as of next year and leaving most my stuff behind (including sound system) but I want to do alot of producing and have been concerned about mixdowns as my earphones are cheap as hell.

It can be hell, but isn't always... if you know what you're doing and actually compress it nicely, or add some eq flavour that you want, then it's fine. The one thing that is definitely hell for the mastering engineer is getting stuff that has already been nuked into a limiter or maximiser (L2, finalizer etc).
If you DO want to compress your full mix, I strongly suggest inserting the compressor onto your output bus before you start the mixdown. Sticking it on after is going to change the mix quite a bit most likely. I would probably stay away from EQing the full mix unless you have really good monitors and/or are very familiar with them, so you know exactly what you're adding or taking away.
