All throughout this section people talk about which programs they use to produce music. Ive heard anywhere from Fruity loops to reason and never once has someone mentiond Pro Tools. I suppose its because its used more for recording instruments and bands etc.. and less for electronic music. But i think it works just fine for using loops and samples and VST's. Then again ive never tried making a hardcore tune. Any thoughts?? Just curious

Haha yea i used to work with cubase and a number of other programs before Pro Tools. But i guess whatever works best, just thought it was interesting. I tried using reason once but that just confused as much as Pro tools did at first.

Pro Tools is great, I've used it a couple of times, but it is very high end, and if course it is hardware based. to put it into perspective, Cubase costs between free (warez) and £500(ish). Pro Tools costs between £400 for Pro Tools LE with an MBox, and many thousands of pounds for the full HD/24 system. And in all cases, Pro Tools requires specific hardware to run.
There is a new version of Pro Tools though that runs with MAudio cards. Not sure on the price though, and it is again a limited version (although I think something like 24 tracks which should be enough..... just).
The other thing with Pro Tools is that it is fantastic on the audio side, but I found let down by the midi side. Its the sort of tool I would only really use after tracking everything down to audio. For any midi work I would use Logic, Cubase or Sonar etc.
Theres a free version of Pro Tools available which only runs on Windows 98 called Pro Tools Free. Don't know if it can still be found inthe depths of the PT site. It was hardware independent and limited to 8 tracks. I used to use it as an audio editor and for sweepers/ads/voiceover stuff and it was pretty nifty

I want a Pro Tools HD rig like the one used by Trouble Maker Studios (the guys who did once upon a time in mexico and spy kids)
Pro Tools is mainly for audio studio use, ie multi track audio recording (vocals, guitars, drums etc)
If I go into making music full time, and become a recording engineer, I'd get Pro Tools.
Underloop, I love your avatar :)

I'm surprised to see a Korg MS20 there, considering it was dicontinued so long ago :)
Pro tools is the easiest software there is to use in my opinion, although i've only ever really recorded with it. If your making a midi based tune then something like Cubase would be alot better, Pro Tools is made for recording and sequencing live instruments mainly (correct me if i'm wrong), so it would be alot less usefull than something like Cubase would be, unless your just using bounced audio as Underloop said :)
But there is nothing stopping you from using it if you want to use it :)

I find ProTools to be very frustrating for working with audio - especially midi. Yah, it's really top stuff to handle the load of working with audio, but i'd take nuendo and adobe audition over it any day for electronic music. it also doesn't directly support vst, which in a case like electronica is quite an issue until you invest in something to adapt the program to it.
