hey i've been mixin for bout 3 months now. . ive pretty much got the basics of beatmatchin down. . still make some little mistakes but no trainwrecks...
anyway i know practice is the key to getting better (im all self-taught) but i think theres a point where your learning curve starts to slow down because you're just trying to get things that *little* bit better - and i thought i would learn to master the basics better if maybe i was tryin to do things a bit harder... (kinda like training with weights on?)

i play a good mixture of everything happy . . . . . . all sortsa stuff i guess the style i play is a bit like Spree (from what ive heard of him) - try to keep it a bit bouncy
are there any things that some of you more experienced DJs can recommend i try to do when im practicing that will generally improve my control & skill over the decks? not aiming to become smooth in harder things straight away (im quite a humble sort... you wont find me saying im the next big DJ! I admit im definitely not ready to play out!) , just think that working on harder things will make it easier to do the simpler things.

once you get the basics down just listen to what style of dj you admire most. listen to when they bring tunes in/out. work more on mixer skills now (ie filtering). try to have each track build off the last.

learn your tunes backwards and forwards to the point you can needle drop and know where it will be.

learn to cut.

check out kevin energy on hardcore tsunami (best example off the top of my head)

its really simple but can add a bit of spice to a mix. dont over use it

learn to be quick and know your vinyl. there is usually a point in most hardcore tunes where it breaks near the end and right at the start for 4 beats. that is where you can switch the bassline without any muddled effect.
ex

* = Kick
- = Bass
track 1 is outgoing
track 2 is incoming

track 1- * - * - * - * 4 3 2 1 * * * *

(Crank those bass knobs now!!)

track 2- * * * * 1 2 3 4 * - * - * - *

you do this right and it will BLAST a mix. really bring up the energy or keeps it pumping.

the way you mix the tracks is what gives a mix 75% of its energy or what can make a hardcore mix feel mellow. 25% is the tune. you can totally change the set just by mixing a tune in a certain way. if you took a bunch of finnish freeform and just kept blending it together it would sounds fast but chill, cause the tracks just kinda sliiiiiiiiide into each other. now take those same tracks and mix a few the way described above and you will have a trippy mix in some parts and a hard mix in others.

all of this is really just salt and pepper. season to flavour.

hope that makes sense, im really tired.

bass drum is different to bassline brian K!

I think he was referring to bass as in all frequencies below a certain level (ie the freq's affected by the bass knob on the mixers EQ)

lol, I know what you mean. when beatmatching the other track, try to speed up/slow down the record a bit with your finger. the beats will then be together

i've been mixing for a bit over a year now. the main thing i'd say to do is practice, it'll somehow all start to come together more and more if you just put in the hours (gets a lot more fun with time as well).

gotta agree with the fourth about cutting, once i'd pretty much sorted beat-matching i started messing about with bits from different songs.

swap a few bars of build up with that of another song's, put vocals from one track over a section of the current tune, cut between bassline's during long mixes. anything that gets you used to using the crossfader will automatically get your beats tighter as you'll be more used to letting them run at the same time.

just keep messing around and if it sounds good, practice it!

one thing i suggest is to use the volume faders instead of the crossfader.
