go with pci.... much better performance. firewire interfaces aren't bad, but they're more expensive. USB is only really desirable if you need portability (laptops n such) IMHO.

I highly rate the M-Audio range of soundcards. I have the Audiophile 2496 (2in/2out) and its fantastic..... and now selling for nearly half teh price I bought it for!!!! grrrrrr

MOTU make some great cards too if you want a higher specced unit

pci it is then.
just havn a look at our local price on the Audiophile 2496 and its pretty much in the same price range as the Echo Mia Midi, but the mia midi is not equiped for live recording.

does the Audiophile 2496 allow direct recording from a mic?

It has phono inputs and outputs...... so in a word no lol

I'd seriously reccomend getting a seperate pre-amp/compressor (mic channel) anyway if your serious about recording, along with a decent mic. Either that or pass the signal through a mixing desk before going into the soundcard.

Great cards.

I have the Terratec Phase 28, which is awesome too. But for pluging in a mic, I use a separate pre-amp.
