Your not gonna get any decent Studio speakers for that price. Save up!! Seriously, save up till atleast 300 maybe. It'll be worth it imo. :)

moneys very low at the moment man. my set up now is what came with my dell pc. harmon kardon speakers and subwoofer. The sound quality from them is excellent and very! very! loud, but people have recomended to me not to use a subwoofer cause they can tend to make your mixes "bass heavy"?

You can get the Alesis MK1 actives, which are exceptionally good, for £200.
So you could probably get some for quite abit less on ebay.
But that's proffesional studio monitors anyway, i don't know what normal good speakers you could get within your price range, but there isn't really an in between as far as i know, you can either get proffessional monitors or normal speakers (im assuming normal speakers aren't what you want, being as you said you want studio speakers).
I think the absolute minimum for any kind of monitors though would be about £150.

yeah i know what u mean by not havin the funds, im in pretty much the same situation. Luckily ive found some music stores here in Australia that hav an option for u to pay whatever u buy over 12 months interest free whilst taking it home first. Great system.
You might wanna check ur local suppliers to see if they hav such a policy, an perhaps get something more decent since ur gonna be using it in a serious way ; )

Hmm, It's not about Loud, It's about the Clarity, flatness and Stereo imaging etc, Which I doubt they're good at. But if your mixes translate well onto other systems from them, then stick with them until you can get a good set of monitors. :)
And It's pretty normal to have a subwoofer if say your producing DnB or your monitors Frequency range don't go low enough.

The Alesis MK1 Active monitors are very good, and definately for the price they are, he doesn't have the money for KRK's. Have you ever used Alesis MK1 Actives?

I've used mk2's active, my mate bought them recently, they sound very crisp & very clear. They come highly recommended from me.

Err, The RP5's are cheaper(£220)and flatter. I don't understand what all the fuss is about the Alesis ones- Always hearing complaints about them.
Stargazer, Breeze, Styles, Gammer, Scott Brownetc have all used and some still use them. :)
Get what ya like, not my loss. :D

can active monitors be connected to a pc easily, i'm a bit worried about buying a pair and then finding out I don't have the right connections/leads on my pc. I take it that active monitors mean that they are self powered and I won't need to buy an amp to power them?

Yeah if they are active they have their own amps :) I don't know how they are connected though, i've never actually looked (i use them at college but don't have my own).
Alesis Mk1 Actives only cost £200 whenever i have seen them.
Stargazer and Scott Brown have used KRK Rokits (they are discontinued now) :P
