Most new stuff is "dj friendly" meaning they have bars of just beats at the begining. Just enjoy yourself when using your decks to start with, try lots of different things.

like i tell other people, try buying two of the same records, and practice mixing them. it's easy and there are no surprizes. give it a try, then mix other records in.
don't stand and stare, just kick your legs in the air

Listen to the songs on 12" before you buy, to make it simpler for starting a good solid drum beat at the start of the record helps to beatmatch, or a song with a heavy beat that is very distinguishable.
Also a record you love and have hurd many times helps as you know most of the record of by heart ie where the breakdowns and melody etc are
=)

buy what you love most :D
as far as collecting try to collect tracks that fit together to begin with until you've got at least enough to play for an hour or so with them then you can branch out a bit more.
if you want something thats easier to mix try nuenergy & other freeform . .. might just be me but i find it heaps easier to mix.
