True.....It all really depends on making the most of what you have....I remember this kind of question bein asked before. Silver mentioned that he couldn't believe what he'd seen bein used in some recordin studios.... I've heard some quality tunes bein made on the music "game" for the Playstation and i've heard some good tunes made on e-bay...I've made some of my tunes on e-bay to start off with.... but I think I done alright when you consider how crap it is haha!!
But at the min...i'm usin software called "Magix". IMO, It's really good and the possibilities are endless....It only cost me £40 odd pounds so i'm pretty happy usin that at the min...then gain experience and move on to reason and those other ones later on.....not willing to fork out £500 quid at the min....

But

Cubase
Reason
FL
All get the job done. Your main thing is what VSTs you will use. Reason doesn't support VSTs.

Alot of people go with FL and Cubase.

There is also Logic Pro 7 for Mac. I've heard a few producers use this as well and I'm interested in checking it out myself.

As for right now I mess with Cubase.

ableton is the cats c*nt!!! its well worth a look...i wasnt to impressed with the whole 'weve mastered live performances' speel they wer goin with...but its dead clever and will really help if someones mixing down a tune from all there dozens of samples!!

has a really decent drum machine u can use keyboard for if u dont have midi and the quantisers really simple to understand

infact the whole thing is super easy to understand!!

if only i can work out how to load up audio samples!!

oh..has an ok basic synth aswell, which is pretty easy to layer...(feeds of 1 midi signal real easy)

am well chuffed!!!
