Ok, so producing music solely from a computer is good - but what about the other stuff?
I've just been using myself and my pc to create my music but I've been looking at external hardware such as the TR-909 as I understand it's a real good beatbox. So the question is, what do you use, in order to use it?! Does it plug into your pc? If so what programs support it?
This question applies for any other external module like the TR-909. If I'm completely wrong then explain to me how it all works Thanks alot.

most of the older gear you run it through midi or a patch to a mixing board, then run that to your computer.
thankfully most of the new gear has usb ports so you can run it straight into your computer.
patch cords are your friend, it's so much fun running different keyboards and fx units through each other to make different sounds.

You can connect synths direclty to your sound using midi too, you just need a cable that converts from a joystick/midi port plug to 2 midi cables, thats what i use :)

You can buy the cable that adapts the joystick to a midi port from places like Maplin or other electronic type shops if you don't have a decent audio shop where you live.
You still have the problem of hearing your hardware sounds with you pc generated sounds so yes a mixer will still be needed if you intend on having more than one piece of hardware. If your soundcard has multiple inputs you can get by without a mixer (although is a ball ache sometimes) or you go the long route with just a stereo pair input by importing/sampling external sounds then play them back thru your chosen sequencer (again a ball ache, not very practile and can stifle creativity )
Although no reason why any of the above will not stop you from getting ideas/tunes down...
The 909 is a wicked piece of kit but rather expensive...if you want hardware drums then check out the Novation Drumstation a lot less cash but sounds just as good, although no on-board sequencer....
Leaves you with being able to channel money else where.......a mixer say, then to spend on other studio kit well thats what I would do
