I do Music Technology, and yeah i think all places at least use Cubase, it's the standard sequencing program with computer music really, but at my college we also use Reason and Fruityloops. On the course i'm on you have to learn all 3, but i think after that it's upto you what you use. We also use Pro Tools, but not for electronic music.

Really unless you have used some sort of seqencing software before when you first look at cubase it will fry your head.
If you can you would be better getting somebody who knows the program to give you a basic rundown of the program and how it works.
The actual program is expensive however I have heard there are ways around this with evaluation copies *cough cough*. Not that I would advertise or condone this on a public message board in anyway.
If you know somebody who has the program and can use it get them to give you a quick going over.......

the thing with cubase is it doesnt have any sounds of its own,all it does is control the sounds from the outboard gear ie samplers and synthesizers
the absolute basics start with general midi from your soundcard which you can play from cubase, but you cant make a decent tune out of just those,it'll just sound like a polyphonic ringtone.
but you can get "soft synths" which are basically synthesizers you install onto the computer, then access them through cubase and thats when the ball starts rolling.
end of the day cubase isnt where to start. i'd go for fruity loops first then when you get the hang of that move on.

You do get some Softsynths integrated in SX! ;)
I don't see a problem with starting there, aslong as you're going to put the effort in, to learn it. :)

Cubase was quite tricky to get started with even after using Fruity, for me. If i had started on Cubase i would have been totally clueless. I don't think you can be anywhere near as creative, to begin with, because everything so much harder, uneccesarily so, if you are just learning how to sequence etc..

You can use audio, which to be honest for my percussion and stuff I find alot easier than using any samplers. The thing is with fruity, yeah if you are gonna teach yourself then I would say use that first but if you can get somebosy to teach you the basics of Cubase then why bother wasting time learning fruity when you will end up on cubase anyway !!!!
