Getting some 1210's in a matter of weeks *applauds loudly*

im into all my gonres of "electronical" music from house to hardtrance, my main gonres are non commercial trance and hardcore....

i was wondering if anyone has any opinions/ tips on starting out, is hardcore goin to be hard to mix with all the vocals and should i stick to trance as im starting and then progresse to hardcore?

i really dont know i just wana b good dj and before you say it yes i know i need practise - ive cleared my diary and told my friends i wont see them for at leastt 2 years as music is my life xxxxxx

2 genres you need to master imo...... trance (proper stuff, not commercial) and breakbeat of some sort (old skool or DnB)

The breaks will get your mixing skills sorted

The trance will teach you to build a set like a pro.

Theres no bad thing about mixing hardcore straight off though, just try out the other genres too.

And of course, remember...... wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off.........

1st tip: Don't get caught up because every mix you have trainwrecks. As a matter of fact, post it. Record it, send it to me, I'd be happy to host it for you for free. The reason you do this is for 1) feeling good about your mixes 2) getting feedback. Feedback is good :P

2nd tip: I heard that you like practice. Thats good, because thats what will get you good.

3rd tip: I spent 2 weeks "cueing" without touching the record. But my good ol' buddy DJ Sy taught me better. Watch his 3 videos here:

you may find that hardcore is a bit easier to beat match than trance due to the BPMs. There are more beats per minut so you will be able to hear if your mix is going out of sync faster than trance.

don't try to mix the music, guide the music.

practice without headphones for the first week. open both channels so you can hear the record thats playing and the one you are mixing in. that way you can fully hear what you are doing and get your ears use to listening to 2 different things .

umm...and have fun.

All good advice. I would especially agree that working with non-commercial trance or prog stuff is a good way to learn the art of layering. Trance particularly has a lot of subtle layers that can be difficult to hear much less mix.

And above all...don't get frustrated.
And if you do....turn the decks off, clear your head, and come back later.

you've done the right thing going for 1210's to start out with. it'll seem a hell of a lot different playing on some different decks, but there isnt going to be any other kind of deck in a club so that isnt an issue

my advice, when finding the pitch, don't fall for the mistake everyone is bound to make. if the next track is slower, dont grab your pitch and move it up,coz it'll speed up too fast then you'll end up moving the pitch back down, and basically the pitch slider will be up and down like a yoyo

so when the record goes out, move it along with your hand then up/down the pitch a little bit, whichever way it needs to go. and keep doing that until it doesnt go out any more.

plus dont expect to be a superstar overnight. it took me 2 years of pissing about in the bedroom before i was anywhere near good enough to play out.

best of luck to ya,might even see ya play alongside me one day ;)

hahah I like that, being a recluse when you first get decks was the only way I found to learn quickly then its just practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice

ohhh and that sig
