how exactly does it work? is there like a small program running on your pc at all times which sends information to a server?

THe program just counts the keys and mouse clicks and send a number to the server which keeps a total of your total keys and clicks pressed. If you join the team it then adds the members totals to the teams total.
The program just counts the keys, it does not store or transmit what keys you pressed.

Is there any known problems with it spyware or stuff like that? Havent signed up yet sounds a bit dodgey.

Nope it aint spyware or anything like that, tiny little program that counts and that it is... I'm running it on all my machines.
