Has to be Fruity Loops. If you are a starter, that is the best software to use as it has a easy drum machine and a piano roll all ready installed.
www.fruityloops.com check it out.

FL is easy for beginners because of it being sequenced based. Reason is another good program to start using, it's a lil more difficult to work with but you can get some pretty good results out of it.
I personally grew up using trackers (mainly fasttracker) and love those to death. I'm currently experimenting around with madtracker and am fairly pleased with it.

Fruityloops for learning, and when you feel you are musically talented then move to cubase ;)

There is no "best for hardcore" only a "best for you".
I personally never got on with FL, Reason or Cubase...... my personal fave is Emagic Logic Audio.
Friend of mine hates all the above, and instead swears by Sonar (formerly cakewalk).
Get demos of them all and try them out before you take the plunge and buy one.

Thank you. That's all that needs to be said. No software is better than others.

Mixdown quality wise, there is a difference, FruityLoops is definately not as good as Cubase in that area :P

I'll vouch for that. If people we to read more about the rendering and aliasing algorithms that each program used, you would see that that more expensive software has better algorithms.
The best thing to be is flexible. What if you can write killer tunes with Reason, and you have to do a collab with a guy who uses a Pro Tools HD system (as unlikely as it is, its just an analogy). If you can learn quickly and have a ear for what you are doing, you're set.
FL is best to learn with though. Best place to start with electronic music imho
Oh, and "No software is better than others." Its a nice statement, but alas much to many peoples (including mine) disappointment is not true.
As I said before different software will be written differently (as in the code) and with different languages thus producing a different sound. Maybe not that much different to the average ear, but it will be different in the pro-audio world.
Its like this: Your an artist. A painter. You could go out and get some cheap watercolour paints from K-Mart and paint a mad picture. No-one will deny your talent. But, there aren't that many paintings in museums that use K-Mart watercolours. If you want a really nice looking picture, you'd spend the extra money on getting the fancy-ass oil paints. Once again, no one will deny the talent, but the oil paints work a lot better, last longer and are generally cooler than the K-Mart water colours.
Same with music. People can work FL to the teeth and make the madest tunes. No-one can deny the talent. But if they were to use more professional tools (such as Cubase, Logic, Pro-Tools) its just like using the oil paints over the water colours.
You get me?
