Is eBay safe to buy turntables off of? I am living in the US, and Colorado is certainly not a electronic mecca. So internet seems my only option. I am really strapped for cash, so, is eBay an OK place to buy turntables?

For example, I can get a pair of Numark TTX-1's and a Matrix 3 mixer for 625 $ american. Which is mad crazy, considering that retails for over $1600 @ guitar center or prosound (the local sound stores).

SO! Is eBay safe?

its iffy just remember nothing is as good as they make it sound. if they say hardly used they mean it! prolly sat in a corner collecting dust and was used as a night stand.

just be careful of what you bid on, look at feedback and dont bid on anything without pictures.

Thanks all, I am probably going to be a little more cautious than I was previously intending on being!

I was looking at some of the sites that Dave Murray reccomended, and it seems to me that the UK must pay a little more than the US. Or I am just seeing things :D ?

Also, is it a good idea to start out expensive? Having never spun before, I've been looking at reviews, and I haven't seen any decks being discribed either "begginner freindly" or not. So I assume that one can go either way as far as a new deck is conscerned. I have been playing with demo versions of PCDJ FX, etc. just to get a feel for how mixing works. And I really want to make more than a hobby out of spinning, eventually.

My question in breif: Should I get higher end turntables, and not really have to upgrade for a while, or should I get a Gemini or Stanton Starter Kit for a couple hundred dollars less and upgrade when my "skill" takes off?

umm well i bought gemini to start but now that i know what im doing i need techs for that precision. its really frustrating not having them now, but at the time i bought the gemini i was unsure if i would keep up with spinning and didnt have the cash to buy techs. i say if you are confident that you will continue spinning just go for some quality decks. no reason to get something substandard if you are going to continue to mix.

If your serious about it, buy tech's... other wise, you'll buy the gemini's and then lose money when you upgrade and sell them.

On ebay you should email the seller, ask them questions about it, like 'just want to make sure it's in full working order and that there are no problems' or something along those lines, you'll get an idea of who your dealing with and then have something in writting beside the item description. Just helps protect you a little more, and if they dont respond, I wouldnt buy. Thats kinda my rule of thumb in addition to reading feedback. :)

Thank you all.

I am pretty confident that I will start and continue to keep spinning. But if the only difference is precision between a Technics and a... lets say... Stanton ST-150 or Numark TTX, why would anyone, had they the cash, go the other way? I am looking at the Numark and Stanton products aformentioned because of thier pitchbend/tempo capabilites. Having not really looked into Technics 1200 MK2's (that is the most current midrange model correct?) because of their price (and I am of the opinion that they are... well, not that "pretty" of a turntable), I was wondering, are they worth the cost if I am not going to be DJing professionally for a few years and not scratch DJing?

Ok here we go...

Newest techs are the Mk5 Mk5G,

Pretty isnt a thing you want to judge decks by

Tech have been around longer, thats why they can charge so much, you know you will be buying quality. The others are the up and commers, havent been around long enough to prove their worth. Some people like em, some don't. Its all taste. Play around with a bunch and see what you like more.

Just remember, if it isnt practical it isnt worth buying. If you cant find an every day use for it, then why have it?

What do you people think of um...Stanton, St - 100's?
I've been wanting to get a job so that I could get decks on my own but noo...my mom is like forcing me to pick an art progam for me to attend during the summer for about 3 weeks! I've been telling her that I want a job and she would say, "I want to you to take some art classes over the summer." So the other day she was like, how much would you want to get paid? $100 a week?? And I said, $50 would be ok. Then she said, how about you take the art classes and I'll give you $50 a week. 0.o Should I just say, I'll take the art classes only if you buy me decks and you won't have to pay me...?
What ever happens, I Will be getting decks before I'm 16!

your mistake was lowballing yourself. you should have stuck with 100. an art class could be fun. plus if you get 50/week it would be nice too.
