I'm going to record one of my mixes and burn it onto cd to have in the car and whatnot. I'm curious, what do you guys do with the wav before your burn/compress it? Normalization comes naturally but what else, a bit of reverb?

When looking at my mixes in the phase scope in wavelab I have a straight vertical line (which means both channels are exactly the same? mono?), but when looking at for example one of cloudskippers mixes the phase scope is all over the place. What's the trick?

did you record it in mono?

Usually, I dont do anything other than a little compression and normalization if nessicary, and chop the silence at the begining and end... you can avoid having to do much post work if you spend extra time watching levels when recording, and it will be a better representation of what you can actually do. :)

Yeah the kernel speaks sense.Watch levels as you record on the mixer, will help your mixing ability as well anyway.
Best not mess around with things else it will not show up your faults in your mixing ability/or your good points.Deffo don't add reverb,no point.

ok, thanks guys!

but still, can anyone explain the deal with the phase scope to me?
Does one straigt vertical line mean I'm recording in mono somehow? (I want steteo) or have I got it wrong?

The explaination I've got of the phase scope is that a vertical line means the two channels are playing the exact same. A horizontial line means they're playing the exact opposite of eachother, thus taking out eachother and there will be no sound.
As I said, on other mixes I've downloaded the phase scope is all over the place (like a big fusy ball )

Rightclick the file and check from the properties if its mono, if it is then you recorded it to mono. If its stereo but it looks (and sounds) like mono then the problem is in your mixer or something.

Oh, and if your rec level is too low, the scope doesnt move that much.

yeah, the wav got two channels (easy to se in wavelab) but are they exactly the same for some reason?

and about the rec level, I always make sure it's as close to clipping as possible without actually clipping but the recording is still lower than most mixes you download.
