Hello, this is the first time I've posted, I've been reading the boards for a little bit and I think there are several other people that fall into the same catogory as me...
I know how to use Cubase, reason, sonar, kontakt, etc... and, its easy to get a trance sound, but HHC/Bouncy hardcore techno I cant get anything close to what I want.
I'm curious how people recomend to get a nice kick with a punchy bass on the half beat that throws it back into the kick. Like a lot of the quosh and evolution stuff. I just cant get my kick and bass sounds to do that. Maybe I just need different samples...
Any help would be great, and I thank all the people who support this forum, its always good reading. :)

First off, compression can give you that driving/pumping effect that you might be after.
Also, using the right kicks is important. Your kicks have to be punchy and as kicking-out-your-teeth as possible.
The bass....I got the sample SB with using layers, don't just rely on the 1 synth, use a couple. Use one for the general sub-bassy-ness and another for the not-so-bassy-but-kinda-trebley bits.
This will hopefully set you on the right track.

Thank you! :)
I think the layering is probably a big party of it... I'll try that and putting some compression on a bus with the kick and bass(es) routed to it.
Hardcore it not easy to make, I'm glad you guys are here to help. :)

That's exactly what i do :) But then that's what everyone does.
1 Synth would definately not be enough.
If your using samples, i doubt if you will ever find one like the ones used in Hardcore, because generally i don' think they get sampled and uploaded, or very very few at least. If you don't use a synth then you are extremely limited to a very few sounds.

I've got a waldorf mQ, and a TBS DRM2, in addition to other softsynths.... I've mostly just ran them live via midi, but now that I have kontakt, I need to start sampleing them and trying more effects and stuff.
I agree, you need synths, hardware or software, you wont get very far with out them. :)

Try also messing about with the envolope settings on the bass sounds to help get the sound to sustain more.
Good Finalizers can help get a 'hang' on bass sounds but don't over cook it.
As always with creative effects a/b the before/after signal.
esp if employing this method at a mixdown stage.
I have found Eq in the right frequency can sometimes help to push the frequency bands on the trail off so there is a link between the off beat bass/kick.
Hard to explain
Is good to try to create sounds so experiment as said with layering up,you may find a nice sound or that sound you have buzzing in your head

Also try cutting some of the low mid out of the kick (around 300/400hz), it lets you here more of the low frequency's and sounds great on kick and bass solo's.

Thanks everyone for the help! I got a sound much closer to what I want than ever before! Still a little housy, but I think a lot of it has to do with my clap sample.... its like something straigt off a Disco D mix. :p

Hey, I can use Fruity Loops 4 alright, but what you guys are saying is kind of confusing me. Are you talking about any program in general, or a specific one? Any advice for getting a kick sound like the one on this song: http://home.comcast.net/~embryoyo/Track_03.mp3 (btw, anyone know the artists name who did this song, I'd like to know?!) If need be I could always mess around with Reason on my friends computer, but I'd prefer to do this on Fruity Loops since I'm kind of familiar with the program.

any program, effects are pretty standard... unless I'm missing what your talking about. :)
when they say cut the 300-400hz range, they mean get a parametric eq set up, set one of the bands to around 300-400 and trim it down.
compression would come from a compressor....
layerin is when you layer two sounds... something I need to play with A LOT more.
The kick in that tracks sound pretty distorted and has a lot of bend on it... atleast thats what I hear. :)
Send me a PM and maybe I can help you if your confussed about somthing, but I have to worn you, I'm not that good at producing, but if you have general nOOb questions, I may be able to help or atleast get you in the right direction. :)

You don't need the right sounds to make hardcore. I know there are alot of Hardcore tracks whichn use similar sounds and give a certain hardcore sound which can be distinguised from other forms of dance. It's better to be original, and come up with your own sounds. If you want tips though then here are some:
The kicks usually form a major part of the hardcore sound but they do not need to be of any particular sound. They shouldn't be dull mind u. Quite full and pounding. Its quite common to distort the kick sound (remember that this increases the signal so reduce the volume). Percussion can be anything, it has no boundries. You can just take simple 909 sounds and manipulate them, for example, by putting a chorus on the claps. Old skool sample such as Hits, stabs hoovers and breaks will instantaly give the feeling of a hardcore rack. Try using major chords a lot for Happy tracks and minor or 7th chords for darkish tracks. You can also give a hardcore feel through intelligent use of EQ. Listen to a hardcore tune, then compare the quality to a tune you have made.
Remember that its not the sounds, but how you arrange them and what you can come up with. Simply experiment with sounds until you are happy with them.

I've been working on my keyboard skills a lot lately and am learning scales better. Thank you for the tips, I really apreciate the help. I have one question about all this too, I know with acid and sonar you can set a project pitch... I've never used it before though, is that something people use, or just go by what sounds good to the ear?
