A friend and I want to learn to produce Happy Hardcore. I am looking to buy a Roland mc303 Groovebox. I was wondering if anyone here had used one of these before? If so I would appreciate your views. What is the most basic level of equipment i would need. Assuming I buy this machine what else will I need? Thanks in advance for your help. Keep it up xRory

I would get the new MC909... the MC303 is way way to old and not very good.

If you have to get a paint-by-numbers box, I agree with silver, save up for the MC909.... the 303 is rubbish..... old sounds, and rubbish midi support. The sounds on the 909 will date (have dated?) too. Your better off getting a cheap computer and a copy of floops or reason in my opinion.... or get a decent sampler/sequencer compination like one of the akai mpc range.

Bugger the groove box.
You're better off getting some software like Reason, or FLoops. Those are prolly the most basic bits of equipment you'll need.
I was going to get the MC303 just to have it, like for a museum. I also saw a TR707 the other day. When I get the money, I'll start my museum.
Since the nucleus of most studio's today are PC's, your better of learning a simple sequencer with some VST support (try orion maybe...) and you'll be way on the track for making music.
Oh, you'll need some musical knowledge/talent.

Know your hardware, the M series and the T series are 15 years apart... the TR707 is crap, the only T series stuff you should want is the SH101 (for weird acid), TB303 (for you know what), 808 (maybe - claps are good) and TR909 (kick drum)... in the case of the MC series only get MC909 it can do everything the MC505 and MC303 can do plus has an inbuild sampler.
Or get a PC with software.

The MC303 is a legendary piece of kit.... ideal for a museum..... it sprouted countless wanna be producers/djs and I might be wrong but I think it was actually the first ever "groovebox"....... hence it deserves museum status :-)
It is useless for production though ha
I agree about the 909, and the 808 has more than just claps on it that are useable (with a bit of processing - great for making up electro style breaks!).
As for the 707 I would have to disagree on that though :-) .... the hats and claps sound pretty similar to those on the 909 (probably the same hat samples - yes the 909 used sampled hats!) although the rest of the beats are a bit rubbish lol.

I know the TR series (being the Transistor Rhythm). I mean for $100, why not own a piece of history? Drum machine history that is. I like the TR707 snares and the kicks too.

I had a mc909 it isnt tooo bad, however it all depends what u want to do. My reccomendation is get a novation remote 25 audio or just the 25 its a good midi controller keyboard as well as having some built in sounds, but u can assign sounds etc to the controller and thus can tamper with the sound in real time and play out tunes on d keyboard. Then u just download cubase or soemthing and whola.

VST = Virtual Instrument. Basicly, its a software version of hardware... kinda.
Instead of having to buy a physical synth or effects box, you can get software that will do it or try to do it, that software is called a VST. DX or DirectX plugins are the same type of software. However, there are lots of VST's and DX plugins that dont have a hardware counterpart.
I'm sure if you google for it you could find a more detailed description, hope this helps! :)

I have an Mc-505 and after hearing it bagged out so many times by so many people I just have to post a little reply:
I love my MC-505! Its got everything u may ever need to muck around with and start making basic tracks. Sure it aint a pro producing computer but hey, if you bought it for that u r a wang.
It is a heap of fun. You can get some good results on it and for laying down melodic, rythm ideas fast it is great. It is very good for more psy oriented sounds.
The 4 layer fm synth architecture underneath it is basic, yes. But it is possible to get fat sounds out of it if u learn it. It is difficult however, layering works really well for me.
If u can get one cheap, get one. Just dont pay top dollar for it.
Maybe u should try a groove box first and see if u really like making this type of music?

from wot i can gather, all dance music is moving in2 more computer basied rather than grooveboxes, so im gona buy 1 almighty fukoff computer!
