hey guys! another question for anyone that's in the know here (and has 3 hours spare to work out what the hell I'm on about!). Basically I've been mixing for a month or so and have found a lot of places in books and online where beat-matching is taught by having channel one (being beat-matched) coming in through the headphones and the current record playing being listened to open eared. i.e. using one current external beat and one new internal beat.
the thing is that my mixer has split cue (think this is what it's called) so I can listen to both channels in my headphones at the same time, this is how I've learnt so far but a lot of information I'm getting is saying that a lot of mixers don't have this option but merely have a switch to listen to either channel one or two. just wanted to know from people who play live and know they're stuff if it's important that I force myself to learn to mix using only one channel through my headphones or if the information I have been reading is out of date and/or unimportant and it's cool to just put the headphone output to play both channels.
thanks for anyone who takes the time to read all of that and knows what I'm going on about!

^^Yeah ,Thats why your better learning only listening to one side in headphones...I donthave a split cue and have it like a quarter on the side im cueing to and 3/4 away from the other side...Best just to learn like i did ,Its easier imo...And then learn the way you've seen when you have to mix on a mixer that doesnt have a split cue :)

yeah, I've just been doing it all through the headphones to get me up to speed with things. will probably start to try it with one headphone side on but I'm sure I wont be playing a club for a while yet so I've got time to learn! thanks smilee
anyone know from experience if most club mixers have this feature? my mixer's not worth much more than £50 so I would've thought expensive models would include it!

the club i used to play in did, when i moved area's when i left my last job the club there didnt have it (after talking with the res dj) cause i was interested in the same question - as i know some mixers dont have it, two years ago after dj for 3 years i decided to see if i could do it the other way (listen headphones in one ear, and listen to the master in the other) cause i was getting worried about the same problem - and found that i can do it just as well, it comes to you, just part of the whole djing becoming second nature thing..
hope that kinda helped

most mixers dont have split cue but the do let you play both decks through the headphones, its just not split right to right and left to left. i learned with split cue then cueing both into 1 ear cup then just 1 in 1. i still check the mix if i do have trouble syncing them by cueing both in the headphones

yeah, that's the one. I don't have split que on mine then, just the ability to play both channels in both ear pieces .... like having the fader centered. I'm glad everyone seems to think it wont be too bad, I was just worried about learning a bad habit from the start and it being a nightmare to get rid of!
cheers guys!

it's a lot easier to play out in a warehouse or a place with echoes if both what is being played and what is being cued go through one headphone
but it also depends on how good of a monitor (if any) they have and how loud the headphone jack will go.
each person is going to be different...the only advice i have is that you just get out there and play and learn while you're playing.
