save me! just got my first set of decks and am trying to learn the art has anyone got any advice cos there's nobody i know that can mix and i'm losing my temper after about 5 mins of sounding really crap!

i know it's gonna take practice and im not gonna sound good for ages but does anyone know any tips to speed up getting started? anything on matching BPM's, dropping in tunes etc.? at the minute im trying to match two records so i can just practice with them knowing they're the right speed but i've spent hours matching them and they keep trailing out!

thanks guys!

If there both set at the same BPM they shouldnt trail out...Speed it up with your finger or something ,Till its exactly in time (Or sounds exactly in time)...
Then it cant trail...

I got my decks in September its now Feburary and i can mix good(Although i dont go on them alot)Just keep practicing....When cueing up the next track always try and get the beats exact...I used to spend about 10 seconds doing it ,But that wont get you it...Spend aslong as you need to get it to right time...Then push it off in... And voila...If the record trails,Push the record with your finger or so...And as Sy says... Move the pitch... Check out his Mixing thingymijigy .. That may help...

Hope i helped

best bet it to pick up a book on basic music theory and learn 4/4 patterns and such, hardcore is structured quite similarly so you can count beats and drop them in sync so they both roll or break down at the same times. and beat matching is just something you gotta learn by ear, make sure the tunes you are trying to match atleast fall within range of eachother though, otherwise your frustrations will never end

i'm starting off with connexions and sonic and i think they're in range..... it's just the technical side of droping in the beat im havin trouble with you rock the vinyl back and forth over it then let it go, yeah? i've been going back over the beat, forwards, back, and then letting go with a bit of a push..... havnt hit one right yet and my belt drives mean trying to alter it delicately enough is gonna take forever!
will just have to keep practicing in 5 min bursts before getting angry and throwing something!was it like this for everyone??

wicked, thanks guys! i taped myself a few times but started to bleed from the ears haha, it was quite useful actually cos i could tell which way the beats were going out of sync.

pulled off a reasonable mix a while ago though so i'm not as depressed about the whole situation anymore!thanks for the tips.... if anyone's got anymore then please post them, i'm going to practice

when you drop a tune in, if you dont get it on the first push (which you won't) speed it up / slow it down with your finger. Let the vinyl be loose, don't control it too heavily....

all dj's get beats trailing out, even pros, take hixxy's mix on bonkers 4 for example. LOL.

Keep at it lad! It takes a while to get the hand of beatmatching even the easiest tunes. Don't give up coz its hard, just keep practicing, and soon it will just click.

As for the direct drive debate, I have never owned a set of DDs. I prefer to practice on belt drives coz that way you really have to work at each mix, so if you get good on belt drives then you are even better on direct drives.

Anyway, keep at it, and let us hear some mixes from you once you start to get the hang of it all!

Matthew aka DJ Underloop

Keep practising and if you feel you arent getting any where then just get two exact pieces of the same vinyl and mix the same tune in with each other as they are sure to beat mix and this should give you the wee bit of condfidence you need and if a tune is way too fast then slow it down a bit then once you get better speed it up. Hope that helps a bit. Ive had my decks now for about 9 years now and im ok at mixing. LOL

thanks guys! am getting the hang of it now, pulling off the odd good mix etc. had a go on a friends £800 stanton direct drives and really dont want to go back to my belt's now can see what you mean about teaching you to be gentle though, i could've stood on them and spun round they were so strong!

thanks for all the help, if anyone's got any more hints and tricks on getting started then keep posting as im sure im not the only learner reading these and finding them useful!

yeah - the first deck i ever played on was a Pioneer CDJ, it was hella fun. Belts skip a lot which sucks, you just have to learn to be gentle. If you master it on belts, youre sorted - nearly all clubs have directs so itll be a breeze to mix on them. Just keep practicing and buying new records, especially ones with breakbeats and stuff at the start. good luck :)

the thing to do is get two records with a clear kickdrum beat put them both on the same speed and speed up the record which you think is going slower and as your doing this slowly ajust your pitch up until you dont have to push the slower record to keep up speed.

the way i learnt was with an MP3 mixer (PCDJ) with this you can use the pitch bend buttons to get an idea. Prehaps record your tune to mp3 and try that way or download NON-LICENCED tunes to practise. this ll give you an idea of how to match it up
