Winamp 5 is just a tad slower than 2. Winamp 3 was really really slow.
They took 2, mixed it with some of 3's features and got 5. (2+3=5)
Personally I still have 2 and installed 5 in a different directory. 2 takes less memory and I only have 256 mbs of ram so when I'm making tunes or drawing it helps.

I still use 2 because of all the tight visualizations I have for it. KataFX 2 = awesome :)
Also never really saw a need to upgrade.. it does the trick perfectly

winamp 2.x used to crash a lot for me, winamp5 seems to have solved those probs, provides support for all plugins, has a vastly improved avs (better than acidspunk and geiss, imho), supports classic and modern skins and provides shoutcast support. admittedly the default skin is ugly but obviously that's easily solved.
winamp5 for me all the way...

Winamp 2 - rocks
Winamp 3 - also rocks
Winamp 5 - rocks (but needs a tweak here and there)
Winamp 3 worked just as well as 2 in every respect... it just ran a bit slower on older pc's. It did support shout cast, I used it all the time to do that. Nothing wrong with it, at all :P Ok it was a new core, but it was just winamp 2 with knobs on :)
I can't see how winamp 5 is heavy either... it's just winamp 2 with some i-tunes style integration with ure music. you can turn it all off with a touch of a button, and never use it. It's compatible with everything winamp 2 was.. so errmm I dnt understand how it's 'heavy'.

I currently have 28 windows open as well as running all the IM's, winamp 2 and a bunch of other stuff... Winamp 2 is the best... it's play's the radio and that's all I need it to do.

That's fair enough, but for people who want more features winamp 3 doesn't suck, neither does 5 - that was my point :)
