45/50 minute sets have been happening for much longer than many people seem to realise. I think a lot presume a set is just "supposed" to be an hour long, and it is pretty normal for them to be an hour but certainly not uncommon to be shorter.
There are masses of recordings from 90s events with sets that are well under an hour. I never really noticed listening to tapes back in the day, I just assumed they'd be an hour long too.
Don't get me wrong though, as a DJ I dislike shorter sets, and don't get me started on 45 minute B2B sets (I'm speaking as a DJ who doesn't play raves especially frequently, it's perhaps different to full time DJs who play several sets a week!)
From a ravers perspective, the event is still the same length and there are more DJs to enjoy, and 45 minutes is often enough (especially when the music through the night is so samey anyway).

Yeah lots of sets from the 90's under an hour, 40-45 minutes, i've even seen a few 30 minute sets on youtube, unless its only 1 side of the tape

I presume the times are for tapes yea. I believe 60 or 90 were the standards for both sides

45 min sets have always been standard. It's usually to get more people on the event. Hour sets are normally reserved for big acts. Above an hour uncommon - maybe a special set or a b2b or a b2b2b. 45 was standard when I was playing out.

Helter skelter in the 90's used to do an hour per set.
