Ahhhhhhhh mate:

Red Sun Rising and Show Me A Sign. These two tunes are uuuuuuunbelievable. I heard them on a Recycled Record promo mix back in errrr, 2008? I can't remember when, but it was a while ago.

Ahh, you've made my day. Those two tracks are glorious.

You don't have an actual release date? Just "April" at the moment?

I'll be buying Power of Dreams 2010 as well.

Also here is a recent interview between Jon Brown and myself. Cheers.

Ben Haze
By Jon Brown

1. Hello Ben, lets begin by getting into your back story a bit, for those UK side that dont already know, where did you begin, what was the starting block for you as an artist in Australia?

I started listening to Hardcore in 1994 and got my first DJing gig in 1998. I always had a large passion for Hardcore and other genres such as Drum N Bass and Trance but Hardcore was my main love and inspiration.

I always looked up to Australian producers like Spellbound and Daydream (Red Rockets) and always wanted to produce one day and reflect what I wanted to hear in Hardcore in my own songs. It basically started as a hobby; I got Cubase in 2001 from Weaver. I asked him to come over to give me a few pointers with Suae and the rest is history as they say.

2. Was it always about hardcore? Or were you into other scenes before that which would lead on to hardcore?

For me I started off loving Hardcore but it was a lot different back then I was mainly influenced by the breakbeat stuff at the time (Kniteforce) and when it split in 94 I went in the Hardcore direction but still kept my interest and ears open to Drum N Bass at the time. I really miss the old sound and elements sometimes especially the speed of the tracks. I love all styles of Trance so was quite happy when the trancier riffs came in around 2000/2001 and some of the old skool stabs were dropped.

3. Both as DJ and Producer, youve been pushing the boundaries of Australian hardcore for quite some time, how was that you learned to produce and what sort of condition was Australian hardcore in then as a scene, was it as vibrant and exciting as it is now?

Back then it was a lot different compared to now. Yes the internet was around back then but you still had to teach yourself a lot of the basics and unfortunately in Australia we didnt have many people to give you advice and tips especially with the new sound coming out of the UK back in 2001 so it was pretty hard at the start. I would definitely have to say Weaver helped me a lot in the beginning and still gives me advice/criticism to this day which is always appreciated. As far as the rest is concerned I had to teach myself a lot of basic music theory and learnt a lot of engineering from reading music mags from the UK and just basic trial and error. I still read a lot today and try and improve on my production.

4. You do have a sound that is distinctly your own, what inspires it, what brings on that creativity?

Basically I get inspiration from other genres and I try putting it all into one or how I would like it to sound. I like bits of bounce but not too much I like the trancier side of things and clean production. I always look highly up to people like Fracus, I really rate his production and style of Hardcore. Also the last few years I get inspiration from older hardcore tracks from the 90s its always great to update an old track with modern production so another generation of punters can appreciate the sounds that I did when I was a teenager.

5. Executive Records is your baby, what were your reasons for starting it in 2004 and how successful would you say its been both home and abroad in that time, both physically and digitally?

I started Executive to be able to push the Australian Hardcore sound to the UK market and abroad. At the time there were no Australian labels and I wanted to take the challenge. I would say for me it has been a successful journey for the past 6 years. We have gone through 2 distribution labels and while it has been hard work and challenging we are still going and getting a lot of support internationally which I am very grateful for. Physically, vinyl sales have not been the best the last two years but we are still making steady progress and in line with other labels. Digital sales have been good and I believe 2011 will see Executive move more and more into the digital market.

6. Youve also had the opportunity to work on some remixes for other labels and organisations such as work on compilations. For those that dont know, give us a brief rundown on some of that work too.

I have worked for other labels such as Raw Elements, Relentless, Nu Energy, Electronic Bedlam, Return of the Clans, Masif, NSR and my other label Recycled Records. Some of my remixes has included Kevin Energys Take Me Up, Tukan's Light A Rainbow which was featured on the Ultimate Hardcore Compilation, and forthcoming I have done a remake of Forever Young for Masif Hardcore which has been doing quite well here in Australia.

It is very hard trying to run two labels make your own tracks and release tracks on other labels. For more information on some of the projects I have worked on please go to http://www.discogs.com/artist/Haze+(4)

7. Youve worked with some fantastic both on the label and on stage, give us a bit more of an insight into to some of the people youve worked alongside, that youve also helped develop and if anyone, theres folks you admire that you would still like to work with, but havent yet? Do you have a wish list?

I have worked a long side Impact, Sc@r, Uplift, Weaver, S3RL, Antix, Suae, JTS, Archie, Dover and Nik Fish. Developing wise I have tried my best to help as many Australians as possible with tuition lessons that I still do to this day and over the internet. Some of these producers include Archie, Suae, Pulsar, Dover, S3RL, Auscore, Haro (Suzuki) and Makio.

In terms of working with producers I have a very long wish list as living quite far away from the action has its downside. I would love to work with Luna-C, Gammer, Breeze, Styles, Fracus, Joey Riot, Darwin, Slipmatt, Cube Hard and Reese.

8. You are also known for your live sets, tell us for those that dont know what is distinctive about your live work and why it makes you stand out individually

During my sets I always love to scratch still and sample from different songs. I try and play a blend of Australian and UK Hardcore and drop the odd drum n bass tune depending on the crowd.

9. Youve had the opportunity to play in many countries as a result of this for many brands. Give us some highlights and do you have or have had a favourite that youd like to re-visit?

Highlight would have to be playing in Christchurch New Zealand in 2005. The country was beautiful and I was looked after very well by the promoters. The people were up for anything and the crowd was very friendly. I would love to revisit New Zealand.

10. Executive Records 018 is released this week, whats it all about, why is it such an important release to you and what more can we see now moving forward from both you and the Executive label?

Executive 018 is very important as it signifies the first release through Icon distribution and 3 massive remixes from Fracus, In Effect and S3RL. I have tried to incorporate 3 different styles. First up you have an old skool feel on the remix of Gonna Be Alright by Scott Devotion, next you have In Effects remix of Australian classic HTID, He has made the remix with a very UK feel which is what is different about this remix, and finally (in my opinion) one of S3RLs biggest tracks Keep On Raving Baby sees the VIP remix treatment and finally available on vinyl. Hopefully this release will cater for all.

This year Executive holds some steady releases including EPs from SPIT, JTS, Weaver and Danny Coggin. I also have more tracks from myself and my main artist/friend DJ Dover. We have all been working hard and hope to bring the punters a variety of music with a steady release schedule.

Ben, thank you so much for your time.
