I've been using reason 2.5 for a year now so i thought i'd share a few tips n that with everyone.
1) The scream 4 unit can be used for applying compresion to a whole mix. Just disconnect the main L+R outputs from the mixer. route them into the inputs of scream 4, then route scream 4's outputs into the audio output device. Now all the signal you hear will be affected by the scream 4. To use the scream 4 as a master compressor, simply switch it to tape mode, turn the damage right down to no greater than around 10. Then adjust the p1 and p2 buttons to adjust the speed and compression to your desire. This is goos for giving a nice warm polished sound.
2) Another way to polish your mix is to run the main mixer outputs through a chain of an eq and a compressor. But I still find this lacks in quality.
I've just learnt how to create a multi band eq in reason, involving using 3 vocoders, 3 compressors, and 3 eq units, now I can apply different eq and compression to the low mid and hi frequencies, the multi band eq is the best way of applying some finishing polish on a reason track.
In the next few days I will post the instructions on how to create the multi band eq. It'l be very helpful to all.
If anyone else has some techniques they use for polishing off their tracks in reason please share them with me.
Hope this is of use to people.

Ok here it is the multi band eq setup. step by step.
1)Create a spider audio merger/splitter, then wire the main output from the master mixer into the splitter side.
2)Hold down shift to disable autowire, then create the following.
vocoder, compressor, and eq.
3)Wire the output of the audio splitter, into the input of the vocoder. then route the outputs of the vocoder into the inputs of the eq. then run the outputs of the eq into a compressor. then merge this chain into the side of the audio splitter.
4)Then switch the vocoder to eq mode and use frequency band level adjustments to cut out all but the high frequencies. You have now created a high range compressor/eq. make sure to label your units!
then to create a mid and low end compressor/eq follow the same steps but just cut out the frequencies you don't need on the vocoder. just use the other empty jacks on the spider. then when you have your big chain finished. route the re-merged signal out of the merge side and into the hardware interface.
Now you have compression and eq control for hi mid and low, helping you to give your track a more proffesional finish.
Hope it helps

Great tips! I've been using 2.5 for a while now, so it's always cool to get some new info.

You mean multi-band Compresser . As EQ's are allready multi-band.

As for anyone just starting on reason. The best thing to do is properly read the manual. I know its boring!. Also i got a book off amazon called reason 2.5 power. I found this very helpful, way better than the manual. It's easy to get frustrated when you're starting out, i should know, but if you keep at it and put sum time n dedication to it, good things will happen

I would say one of the best approaches to reason, is to treat it like lego, building the sounds you want out of the small pieces you can get your hands on. Even if they are rediculously small pieces.

yeah its amazing what you can achieve by layering sounds and detuning them slightly. God i love reason!

Damn freakin straight. The combinator makes layering soooo much easier too!

hey guys,
i will admit, before reading this thread I didnt actually know what compression was but I understand now...... i tried the scream method and it worked, but I could actually hear the compression too much... ie
it made my hi hat and the snare kind of crunchy instead of crisp... so i routed the mixer though an EQ and compressor instead and I got the sound I wanted it and managed to keep the volume levels pretty high without it red lining.
i want to make a few more tracks before I post them online tho ;)
I still need to play around with the compressor so i get more to grips with it but your thread was really helpfull.
cheers again :D
