A compressor amplifies all peaks within a sound that peak at a level below a certain threshold by a certain ratio. What this means to teh sound is that it decreases the dynamic range, making it appear louder. It does this because the rms (root mean squared - effectively the average level) of the signal is amplified, even if the peak value of the signal is not (another term is loudness). Tends to be used lightly when recording vocals and acoustic instruments so as to get a hotter signal into the recorder, and then later on in mixing to get a fatter sound on drums and vocals and basically anything lol. Its what makes Fat Boy Slim's drums so BIG
Distortion does exactly what it says on the tin. It distorts the signal. Theres different types of distortion, but effectively they all do teh same thing and add harmonics into the signal, creating a kind of buzzy, dirty, gritty sound. I prefer overdrive usually as its slightly warmer, whereas true distortion can sound a little cold.

Distortion can do alot to a bassline if your going for a more gritty sound.

don't compressors work the other way around? by decreasing the amplitude over a given threshold at the set ratio after they are triggered? the and the amplifying sound come when the compressor releases depending on the setting

I always thought it was a combination of both, although once the ratio is above a certain level it's considered limiting :)
